What Does The  'Free' Mean?

When the Free Methodist church was founded there were several “FREEDOMS” that were important for the founders.

FREEDOM FOR ALL PEOPLE: They took a strong stand at a difficult time for freedom for the slaves.

FREEDOM IN WORSHIP: Worship had become performance and non-participatory. Free Methodists believed in participatory, heart felt, freedom to worship God.

"I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."

Matthew 25:40 (NIV)

FREEDOM FOR THE POOR: Pews in churches were rented, not free. Rich people got the seats, poor people got the floor, if they could get in. Free Methodist said all people are welcome on the front row at no charge.

FREEDOM FROM SECRET SOCIETIES: Secret Societies were influencing the church negatively through secret social groups. Free Methodists wanted to avoid all oaths to secrecy so the church could be open and relational.

FREEDOM FROM MATERIALISM: People were chasing money instead seeking to build the church and help the poor. Free Methodist wanted to be free from greed in order to do more for Christ.

FREEDOM FOR INVOLVEMENT: Ministers and Denominational Leaders were making decisions without listening to the input of godly people in the pews. Free Methodists, although believing in spiritual authority through godly pastors, believed God could speak to all of His people and wanted to give them a voice in church ministry.

What is the Difference between Methodist and Free Methodist?
  • Methodist churches today vary widely from liberal to conservative.
  • Free Methodist churches are all conservative in lifestyle and doctrine.
  • Methodist churches are usually more reserved in worship.  Free Methodist are more open and free in worship.

  • Methodist churches are usually less concerned about evangelism. Free Methodist churches are usually very evangelistic.
  • Methodist churches are generally less apt to see God’s Word as the final authority.  Free Methodist churches hold to high view of the Bible and it’s final authority.

Although there is harmony between the Methodists and the Free Methodist, there are no organizational ties between the two.
